Creative Writing

A 10-week course with Celia Brayfield

Who?  

The course is suitable for anyone who would like to improve their writing or learn the core techniques of writing fiction – short stories or novels. The course aims to build confidence in beginning writers and offer more experienced students the opportunity to expand their skills and enjoy the motivation of a weekly class. All you need is a working knowledge of English and a small amount of time for a reading or writing assignment each week.


How?  

A friendly and informal course which will combine short seminars, discussion and writing exercises with some home assignments.

Each evening will comprise two 45-minute sessions with a break at half time for refreshments. You will need something to write with in class – pen and paper or a laptop.


What?  

  • The course content will include:
  • Descriptive writing
  • Use of language
  • Creating, animating and introducing characters
  • Writing from life
  • Structure, narrative and plot
  • Writing dialogue
  • Point-of-view
  • Where ideas come from
  • Working out a theme
  • Learning from reading

Within this framework, there will be flexibility to design a course according to the interests and needs of the students. There is no reading list for the course, but individual suggestions for further reading will be given as appropriate.


When?  

From Monday September 19 2005, from 7.15 to 9pm. Doors open 7pm.

The course will run until November 28 2005, with a break on October 24.


Where?  

The Raphael Room, St Michael & All Angels Parish Hall, Bedford Park, Chiswick, W4 1YX. The Hall is beside St Michael’s Church at the junction of Bath Road and Turnham Green Terrace. Underground: Turnham Green – the station is 50 metres away. Buses no 94 and E3 stop outside the Hall. Parking is usually easy and free after 6.30pm.
